Overview

The Director of Student Health is responsible for managing all aspects of the Office of Student Health within the Division of Student Affairs (DOSA).  Responsibilities include maintaining accurate student health and immunization records, providing health records to student clinical rotation sites, providing evaluation of acute illnesses, performing some outpatient procedures, providing wound care, ordering labs and diagnostic tests including drug screenings, sponsoring vaccine clinics (flu and immunizations), and providing health education and counseling. Collect pertinent student data and coordinate with other team members for appropriate student intervention.  Work cooperatively with DOSA team.  The successful candidate must also demonstrate the University’s core values intellectual pursuit and service to humanity through their work.  Displays an inclusive and welcoming attitude towards all members of the community.

 

The Director is responsible for providing an array of medical services to the university students. He/she is the custodian of all student health records and is responsible for insuring that all immunization and health screenings are up to date. He/she is also responsible for handling drug screenings and proving documentation to the clinical rotation sites.  He/she also provides health education and counseling programs.

Responsibilities

  1. Evaluation of acute illness (sore throat, cough, ear infection, pink eye, etc.)
    1. Short term supply of refills
    2. Suture lacerations, splint or wrap strained ankles, fingers, etc.
    3. Perform physical exams as needed, and include a chaperon when appropriate
    4. Order labs, diagnostic tests or radiology imaging
    5. Referrals to specialists and send all medical records to referring physician’s office
    6. Wound care- dressings, suture/staple removal
    7. Perform outpatient procedures such as: urinalysis, pregnancy test, rapid Strep test, glucometer
    8. Send out cultures (urine, throat)
    9. Provide customized lab requisition forms for Quest and Primex
    10. Compile a list of referrals for specialist, urgent care, dentist, etc.
    11. Perform blood pressure, glucose check
    12. Provide required vaccines to students
  2. Leadership Responsibilities
    1. Provide leadership for the Student Health Center staff team
    2. Hire, Train, Evaluate, and Supervise the Student Health Center Staff members.
    3. Complete and or oversee all administrative responsibilities in the Student Health Center.
    4. Work closely with any other providers in the Health Center- Student Health Center. 
  3. Health education and counseling
    1. Lecture for brown bag lectures and other campus presentations
    2. Guest speaker or instructor for various programs
  4. Troubleshoot any insurance discrepancies or claims verification
    1. Handles all communication with rotation facilities regarding immunizations or documents
    2. Clerical services for graduates, providing request documents of health records or results
  5. Sponsor clinics for flu (for employee, students and family members), PPD and other immunizations as requested.
  6. Communicate with all students and programs (when needed) about immunizations, urine drug screening
    1. Order random drug screenings and set up toxicology acct with Quest Diagnostics
    2. Verify all positive urine drug tests; Work with Dean of Students following institutional policy
    3. Immunization record keeping
    4. Create templates in the appropriate web based software program COM, DPT, PA, OT, Nursing
    5. Send out reminders about expiring or missing immunizations
    6. Scan and upload urine drug screen results into appropriate web based software program
    7. Initiate a urine drug screen protocol and policy.
    8. Create various forms (urine drug screen consents, clinic patient intake/physical exam forms, medical release, etc.)
    9. Handling urine drug screens and physicals for rotations for each applicable program.
    10. Following institutional policy, handle all needle stick students with incident report, ordering labs and surveillance labs as needed or required
    11. Update all immunization letters each time student goes on clinical rotations.
    12. Email all students their updated immunization letters
    13. Forward all updated immunization letters to clinical education department
  7. Administrative Responsibilities
    1. Copy, fax, email or mail all health records to clinical rotation sites or students upon request
    2. Submit claims verification or medical records to insurance companies as supporting documentation for ordering labs or diagnostic tests
    3. Serve on the TUN Behavior Intervention Team (BITs)
    4. Serve on the TUN Alcohol and Drug Committee
    5. Co-author TUN Biennial Drug and Alcohol Review
      Schedule appointments, answer emails and phone calls
    6. Order educational pamphlets from CDC, National Institute of Mental Health for Student Center display table
    7. Enter and maintain all data into appropriate web based software program.
    8. Maintain and order medical supplies for the Student Health Center
    9. Collaborate with Student Counseling, OASIS, and Dean of Students on stress management and any  prevalent issues
    10. Negotiate with local radiology facilities and laboratory for discount rates for TUN students
  8. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Unencumbered Physician Assistant License or Nurse Practitioner License in the State of Nevada.   
  • Current ACLS and BLS certification.

Experience:

  • Knowledge of principle and practices underlying the special field of student health
  • Experience in higher education setting preferred
  • Knowledge of State and Local laws relating to health and social issues
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in working with people from different demographic backgrounds
