Overview

The Director provides support for the day-to-day longitudinal student success in the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) at Touro University Nevada (TUN). She or he works collaboratively with other COM faculty to develop, implement and monitor strategies to optimize and integrate the students' learning and performance through the application of basic sciences to and the ongoing integration with the clinical practice of medicine. The student success is directed to any and all students, including students who demonstrate academic challenges. This position reports to the Director of Assessment and Curriculum Effectiveness of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Touro University Nevada.

 

The individual in this position works with academic faculty and administrators to identify students who are experiencing apparent academic difficulty with their didactic exams, shelf exams, COMLEX Level 1 and 2CE preparation, CMR planning and study skills, including time management. The Director serves as a resource for faculty, staff, and students to determine the best approach to provide academic support for students who are struggling. She or he markets available services and documents the use of and assesses the effectiveness of services offered to students. She or he maintains and develops an academic success plan for students that allows ongoing monitoring of student success and its respective adequately detailed documentation thereof. The individual in this position also frequently serves as student-to-faculty contact and provides support for students who are struggling with personal issues that appear to interfere with their academic performance.

Responsibilities

  1. Learning Assistance for Students
    1. Design and conduct opportunities for all students to enhance their academic performance through one-on-one meetings and small group presentations on topics such as study skills, exam preparation, stress management, and learning throughout all four years.
    2. Create classroom-based presentations on academic performance success in COMLEX preparation for Level 1 and 2CE.
    3. Knowledgeable and up to date on student trends as it relates to academic interventions designed to improve performance. Provide data analysis of results from existing ancillary programs related to students support such as Combank, Uworld, Aquifer and other TUNCOM resources.
    4. Manage CLNV 905, 910, and 915placement and study requirements for students.
    5. Manage CMR planning for COMLEX Levels 1 and 2CE.
    6. Assist in the day-to-day assessment within TUNCOM as needed.
    7. Liaison with Student Affairs for Disability Services and Student Counseling.
  2. Services for Faculty
    1. Assist Associate Deans and Assistant Deans, Director of Assessment and faculty with tracking, management and reporting the performance of each course including aggregate data about individual course results.
    2. Develop and maintain an online academic success newsletter or other materials with teaching advice based on sound pedagogy in medical education.
    3. Consult with individual faculty/preceptors who request advice on working with students who experience academic difficulties.
    4. Provide support for COCA, AACOM and other stakeholder reports, as necessary.
    5. Provide support for Match as needed.
    6. Meet with students in academic peril throughout the first and second year within the Academic Success Committee to provide strategies, and other targeted success advice.
    7. Collaborate with Assistant Deans on CStarc committee, meeting with students who are referred for academic or personal assistance.
    8. Membership in the Student Promotions Committee to provide background on students referred for academic issues as needed.
    9. Direct students to institutional services beyond academic strategies as needed.
    10. Provide an ongoing longitudinal vision and tracking to project student pathways to success and potential early intervention through the four years.
    11. Collaborate with Student Outcomes and Data Specialist on predictive analytics identifying opportunities to provide students with individualized support.
    12. Collaborate with Director of Assessment to review and analyze didactic student data for possible interventions.
    13. Other duties may be assigned, including but not limited to serving on committees, work groups, etc.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Psychology, Student personnel, Counseling, or a related field; Professional Degree such as DO or MD (or equivalent) is preferred as is a Ph.D. (eg in Psychology) or Ed.D.

Experience:

  • Three to five years of experience in an educational setting providing academic support services for graduate and professional students; Experience in providing support for medical students or other healthcare professional programs preferred.
