Assistant Dean of Clinical Continuum

The mission of Touro University Nevada COM is the education of medical students to become well-rounded osteopathic doctors through innovative and supportive pre-clinical and clinical pathways. The Assistant Dean supports a broad range of activities in the Department of Clinical Education and serves as a resource and liaison to students, staff, and faculty. The Assistant Dean is responsible for supporting a number of services to students and preceptors, as well as ensuring students have access to faculty guidance and counseling in coordination with other administrative faculty.  The Assistant Dean will support the clinical continuum through collaboration with academic affairs, OMM and clinical skills.

The office of Clinical Education introduces our medical students to meaningful, diverse clinical experiences in various settings. The Assistant Dean for Clinical Continuum is responsible for ensuring affiliated sites provide meaningful educational experiences; contributes to the education of students; managing student relationships; ensuring clinical achievement; aids in the attainment of leadership to all clinical education faculty and staff. The Assistant Dean for Clinical Continuum reports directly to the Associate Dean for Clinical Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Demonstrate comprehension of the Student and Faculty Manual for Clinical Coursework and the policies and procedures contained therein. Be familiar with the numeric designation of the core third-year clinical courses, as well as any other clinical courses that have an organized didactic component. Assist in the maintenance and creation of manuals for the department.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the clinical curriculum and be able to access the various clinical courses on and generate the various reports necessary to evaluate student performance
• Maintain and develop curricular documents for CORE clerkships or other electives as needed.
• Initiate and maintain research on ongoing potential improvements and additions to the ancillary programs and expectations for clinical students and didactic opportunities.
• Assist with the creation of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) and Letters of Good Standing for students.
• Facilitate the transition of students from Year 2 to Year 3 and Year 3 to Year 4 including but not limited to assistance of students with their planning for COMLEX 1 and 2CE.
• Partner with academic affairs to align clinical education with the overall academic curriculum
• Coordinate with clinical skills faculty to develop and implement effective clinical training programs
• Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the clinical curriculum ensuring the curriculum meets accreditation standards
• Integrate new and emerging trends in clinical education to keep the curriculum current and relevant
• Represent the Clinical Education Department on various committees as assigned within the University.

Strategic Planning

• Provide leadership through maintenance and development of external groups and associations in AACOM, ACGME and others to distribute and support the mission of the COM and Clinical Education including trends in matching, residency and excellence in the clinical education sector of osteopathic and allopathic medical schools.
• Assist in the development of the strategic plan for the clinical education department.
• Drive innovation through the implementation of innovative practices in clinical education to enhance student learning and outcomes
• Stay informed about advancements in medical education and integrate relevant technologies and methodologies
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement by regularly reviewing and updating clinical education practices
• Solicit and incorporate feedback from students, faculty, and preceptors to improve the clinical education experience

Site and Faculty Development

• Participate and initiate site visits, as assigned by the Associate Dean for Clinical Education, to assess the quality of facilities used in clinical clerkships and the effectiveness of clinical preceptors
• Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Clinical Education, work to develop and participate in continuing medical education programs for the clinical faculty, both full-time and adjunct
• Develop and maintain professional development and training materials for clinical sites and preceptors
• Participate in training of new Touro adjunct clinical faculty who will be involved in the education of students during their clinical years

Student Developmental Counseling for Clerkships and Residencies

• Counsel and advise third- and fourth-year students as needed before, during and after matching, under the direction and assignment of the Associate Dean and with collaboration of other senior leadership in Clinical Education and the COM
• Assist students through reviewing their personal statements and curriculum vitae as needed.
• Participate as a member of Clinical Students at Risk Committee (Cstarc)

Staff Leadership and Development

• Provide leadership and training as needed for the other deans and staff of the Department of Clinical Education.

Core Management Responsibilities

• Demonstrate an understanding of the various roles and responsibilities of the Associate Dean for Clinical Education and any additional deans or senior leadership as added to the Department of Clinical Education, with the ultimate goal of becoming cross trained sufficiently to enable the day-to-day management of clinical aspects of the Department of Clinical Education.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• May perform other duties and responsibilities that supervisor or administrative leadership may deem necessary
• Assist in the maintenance of accurate preceptors lists, their credentialing and annual renewal reviews and report monthly CME to the appropriate Touro department. 
• Become familiar with and develop competency with all electronic management systems utilized by the Department
• Become familiar with and develop competency in resolving clinical clerkship issues involving student behavior and expectations.
• Liase with COM faculty and other members of the TUN campus community

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Terminal Degree: Doctoral degree in a health-related profession or education.
• Board Certification by AOA or ABMS if MD or DO
• Active Nevada license if appropriate for degree
• Three years of administrative experience in teaching or advising medical students and/or residents
• Prior service as medical school faculty
• Prior delivery of scholarship either through research or faculty development
• Microsoft Office Suite
