Overview

The Vice Dean provides leadership for the planning, implementation, maintenance and continuous quality improvement of all domains and activities pertaining to the dedicated mission and exciting growth of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Touro University Nevada.

 

Areas of competency include medical school Accreditation, Admissions, Assessment, and Curriculum/Academic Affairs Innovation along the Continuum from Undergraduate Medical Education (UME)to Graduate Medical Education and Continuous Medical Education Curriculum. Furthermore, competency domains include Alumni Affairs, Continuing Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education, and strong collaboration with the Offices/Dean of Student Affairs of Touro University Nevada and the Office of Research. The guiding goal is to bring to life the Medical School’s Mission of educating compassionate, clinically, and culturally competent physician leaders. Responsibilities

  • Oversee Academic Leadership and Curriculum Development

In collaboration with the various academic units and departments and their respective administrative leadership, the Vice Dean will oversee the undergraduate medical education curriculum (UME) development and ensure appropriate delivery.

    • Engage faculty through the Curriculum Committee to develop curricular innovations using multiple learning formats including online learning technology.
    • Collaborate with the Curriculum Committee throughout curriculum planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.
    • Ensure that all directives of the Committee are implemented.
    • Collaborates with the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the Dean of Clinical Education to coordinate curricular efforts on the continuum from UME to GME and where possible in collaboration with the other Touro Osteopathic Medical Schools.
    • Combine and consolidate curriculum where appropriate to do so.
    • Initiate opportunities for inter-professional education and training.
    • Ensure appropriate student evaluation techniques
    • Assist in the development and integration of creative, relevant measures of competency into student evaluations
    • Develop separate processes for formative and summative evaluations.
  • Oversee Accreditation Activities (COCA, Middle-States, others)
    • Ensure that the COM continues to remain up-to-date with all required standards and complies with all documentation and supportive substantiation of meeting all accreditation requirements pertaining to the mission and vision of the COM; the COM’s financial support, academic and curricular domains, student support, facility and educational resources (e.g. IT, online/virtual/in-person support resources) and all other standards to meet the accreditation requirements of the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) and other relevant accreditation agencies such as the Middle States Commission on Higher Education or  other accreditation requirements.
  • Oversee the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services
    • Ensure that the admissions processes are clear, fair, and transparent.
    • Work with the Admissions Committee to ensure that the schools’ mission goals are met, including standards of academic excellence and diversity.
    • Work with Enrollment Services to ensure that applicant and student records are appropriately maintained and all FERPA regulations are met.
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs and the Office of Student Outcomes and Effectiveness
    • Ensure that student-related policies and procedures are maintained, communicated and implemented.
    • Provide resource/knowledge support for student health insurance, student health and wellness programs.
    • Provide support for student organizations and activities.
    • Provide support for the TUNCOM Alumni and maintain effective communications and relationships with the alumni community.
    • Maintain related databases for outcomes assessment and reporting.
  • Oversee Continuing Medical Education
    • Oversee strategic growth and development of continuing medical education.
    • Work with leaders of other health sciences disciplines to develop innovative and interdisciplinary continuing education programming.
  • Oversee Student Success Activities/Advising and Mentoring
    • Ensure that students have appropriate programs, tutoring and tools needed for academic success; in collaboration with Student Affairs and other active programs of the COM, including Academic Affairs and Clinical Education.
    • Track academic progress of students and ensure timely intervention when needed.
  • Oversee Faculty Development.
    • Initiate regular meetings with departments and understand ongoing faculty needs based on ongoing, quality needs assessments.
    • Tailor faculty development to ensure that individual departmental needs are met.
    • Develop and incorporate plans to link faculty development to the faculty promotion and tenure process.
  • Assist in expanding TUNCOM’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) efforts
    • Collaborate and integrate clinical activities with existing and new residency programs, including the active contributions to the residency application and selection process, to ensure high-quality medical education and training in collaboration with all of our hospital partners.
    • Work with GME staff to support our affiliate hospitals in their efforts to achieve Osteopathic Recognition and to ensure the continuum of Osteopathic education.
    • Support hospital partners to develop and expand GME programs.
    • Facilitate the management of staff dedicated to the GME/hospital rotation efforts.
  • Spearhead TUNCOM’s strategic plan
    • Together with the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs spearhead TUNCOM’s strategic planning and organize a cogent approach of strategic execution, implementation, and continuous quality improvement processes.
    • Encourage Academic and Student Affairs faculty and staff, respectively, to pursue extramural grants to develop and publish educational research and continually innovate and improve our undergraduate medical education.
  • Represent TUNCOM in University activities related to academic initiatives and domains
    • Represent TUNCOM in University (Touro University Nevada; Touro University, etc.) activities related to academic initiatives and domains such as meetings of education deans from other schools, activities related to the COM and University accreditation Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Stratford campus inter-school collaboration group activities, etc.
  • Work in tandem with the Dean and represent the Dean for assigned functions.

Qualifications

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

Eligible for licensure to practice medicine Nevada, Board Certified in any specialty, preferably Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Med/Peds

Minimum of ten years’ experience preferred in undergraduate and graduate medical education;

At least five years of academic administration experience at a senior level that includes academic and student affairs management and administration preferred.

Outstanding leadership, interpersonal communication, collaboration, team building, and negotiation skills with a varied constituency (students, faculty, chairs, staff) are essential.

Ability to work with people from diverse racial, ethnic, gender identity, and socioeconomic backgrounds and adapt a flexible leadership style for multiple cultural environments with a strong knowledge of racial health disparities.

Experience with Osteopathic Medical Education is preferred.

 Experience in admissions/enrollment management and academic accreditation is strongly preferred.
